Mary moved to Oxfordshire in 2011. She is an amateur astronomer, Astro photographer, speaker, author and podcast co-host who has had a life-long interest in Astronomy. Mary and her husband have a garden observatory and many of her photos are taken there. She is passionate about astronomy outreach and has been giving talks to many societies on Astronomy and Astrophotography since 2015. Mary has spoken at many festivals both in person and online and presented a webinar for Sky at Night Magazine.  Some people believe that space exploration is a waste of money, but there are so many everyday things that we take for granted that wouldn't exist without it. This talk takes a deep dive into this subject, looking in detail at direct benefits thanks to satellites etc., but also taking a look at some of the less well known spin-offs.
