Public Health Advice - CPR

We're never too old to learn a new skill! And learning how to administer CPR (or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) can literally mean life or death in an emergency situation.

When a person’s heart stops beating or the person stops breathing, death can occur within minutes. CPR can not only help to save lives but but can also minimize the damaging effects that can occur while waiting for emergency responders to arrive (for example, damage to the brain).

Sudden Cardiac Arrest is witnessed by a bystander in approximately 37% of cases. That bystander could be you! Being trained in CPR provides the knowledge, confidence and skills to stay calm in a medical emergency and help a person in need. Individuals certified in CPR are prepared to make a difference in their community by being ready to jump into action anywhere a cardiac arrest happens.

The world of football has seen its fare share of cardiac arrests on the playing field in recent years. Footballers often put themselves under intense pressure to perform well, leading to increased adrenaline and heart rates during games or training sessions. The resulting strain on the cardiovascular system can make it more difficult for oxygenated blood to reach all body parts, causing cardiac arrest in some cases.

To help both raise awareness of CPR and to educate the ordinary man and woman on the street in how to perform these life saving actions, Sky Sports (through their gambling arm, 'Sky Bet') have joined forces with the British Heart Foundation to launch the Every Minute Matters campaign.
